In Gimp and Scribus I can change the rulers on left side and top
to show dimensions in inches. Is this possible in Inkscape?

This only works for (me in) the currently open document... there is no
way (that I could find) to make this change for basic new documents...
(no provision for it in the Inkscape Preferences, in the same menu
(File). Wondering if this is truly so? & if so, why (probably a dumb
question here, but you sometimes don't know unless you ask)?

Thanks,
Henry

To make any changes to the default file, you have to save a new version
of the template file with the settings you want. The template file
should be somewhere in your home directory (different according to
platform).

Units are stored as part of the document, not as global preferences.
Therefor you can change the default template to your preferred units or
create new templates for the most used default units you need.

So I could save a template the same size page but each one with inch, mm,
cm, px and then just open the template for the measurement I want to work
in?
Cool

I know 0.47 is only just creeping out but where can we make suggestions for
future/upgrades inkscape releases?
I'm asking as I have a digital die cut machine (a blackcut cougar) and we
use Inkscape as our design software (we cut via signcut) and to fill a shape
with vector paths that the blade will follow (we replace the blade with a
engraving/embossing tool) at the press of a button would be great.

Here, or InkscapeForum.com, or create a RFE or blueprint as detailed as
possible (maybe with mockups) and add it to the bug tracker?

You can create your own (vector-based) patterns with Inkscape 0.46
already... ( ...and store them in your custom templates):

or do you want Inkscape to press that button ;-) ?

LOL well if Inkscape can press the button it'll be fun, but then this may be
easy to do and we can press our own buttons ;)

Now the problem would be explaining what I'm talking about. I could show
someone in about 1 minute, to tell someone would be an essay <grin>

Thanks, I'll have a look at the links you supplied and see if they are what
I'm after. may work out easier then I think (prolly not the first time round
mind you LOL)

Forgot to add: in the 'Save as...' dialog, on the left side under places
you find the entry 'templates'. You can save any open document directly
as a user template from within Inkscape. The new template is then added
automatically to the list under 'File > New...'.

The files are stored in a (platform-dependent) user location and are
kept even when you update Inkscape to a new version.

unix-like os:
~/.inkscape/templates (Inkscape 0.46)
~/.config/inkscape/templates (Inkscape 0.46+devel, Inkscape 0.47pre)
